Abstract


This study was carried out to investigate the effect of Ga-As laser irradiation on the regeneration of experimentally cut sciatic nerve in 8 rabbits. Left and right sciatic nerves were cut and immediately sutured with 8-0 nylon by epineural
suture
under
microscopic field.
Left and right sciatic nerves of the subjects were classified into the lased and the non-lased groups. The group was irradiated by Ga-As laser for 5 minutes everyday for four days.
At 1, 2, 4 and 8 weeks postoperatively, electrophysiologic study was performed and then the subjects were sacrificed for histologic study.
@ES The results obtained as follows:
@EN 1. In macroscopic observation, ulceration and muscular atrophy in the operated legs of all subjects were observed, and fibrous adhesion was also observed around the sutured region of the cut sciatic nerve.
2. In electrophysiologic findings, the threshold intensity and the conduction velocity at the cut sciatic nerves were no statistically significant differences between the lased group and the non-lased group.
3. In histologic findings of both the lased and the non-lased groups, the extent of Wallerian degeneration was decreased at 2 weeks,and the perineural regeneration and the proliferation of the Schwann cells were noted at 8 weeks, but the level
of

was somewhat higher in the lased groups than the non-lased groups.
4. The number of inflammatory cells and the extent of destruction at adjacent tissue were decreased from 2 weeks, and the extent of inflammatory cell infiltration was remarkably decreased in the lased groups compared to the non-lased groups from
